What is ISO 42001?
ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the international standard for establishing and managing an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS). The standard provides organisations with a structured framework for responsible AI use, governance and risk management — regardless of whether you develop, deploy or procure AI as a service.ISO 42001 aligns with familiar ISO standards such as ISO 27001 (information security) and ISO 9001 (quality) and is built according to the High Level Structure (HLS). This makes integration into existing management systems straightforward.
Why ISO 42001?
- EU AI Act: ISO 42001 supports compliance with the EU AI Act, which from 2026 requires mandatory risk assessments for high-risk AI systems
- Stakeholder Confidence: Demonstrable responsible and ethical AI use towards clients, partners and regulators
- Risk Management: A systematic approach to identifying and managing AI-specific risks such as bias, hallucinations and data privacy
- Competitive Advantage: Differentiate your organisation as a trustworthy AI user or provider
ISO 42001 & EU AI Act
The EU AI Act categorises AI systems based on risk: unacceptable risk (prohibited), high risk (strictly regulated), limited risk and minimal risk. High-risk AI — such as AI in HR, credit scoring, biometrics or critical infrastructure — requires mandatory conformity assessments, registration and continuous monitoring. ISO 42001 provides the management framework to meet these requirements and be demonstrably compliant with the EU AI Act.Our approach
- AI Inventory: Cataloguing all AI systems in your organisation and classification based on EU AI Act risk levels
- AIMS Setup: Implementation of the AI Management System in line with ISO 42001 — policy, governance, risk analysis and controls
- Ethical AI Guidelines: Develop internal guidelines for responsible, transparent and fair AI use
- Audit Guidance: Internal audit, management review and guidance through external certification
